Origin of the name
Ningal "The Great Queen" was a Mesopotamian goddess of Sumerian origin, believed to be the wife of the moon god Nanny/Sin. A symbol of caring, mother and lady. It is assumed that she was part astral deity, as was her husband. He was also called Zirru, a term that may mean a female bird.
Ningal's iconography is not consistent and has been depicted in many different ways. On the Ur-Nammu stele, Ningal is depicted sitting on her husband's lap. These types of performances were intended to show the intimate nature of the relationship between the deities and emphasize their ability to act in harmony. There are also images of Ningal seated on a lion's throne.
